Quoting Kevin Cordes:
Regarding the photograph of the WI group by the bench in 1994, is the Doris Linegar in the photograph the proprietor of Linegar's fish and chip shop at the top of Shortlands Road?

Hi Kevin,
Yes Doris Linegar in the photo was the proprietor of Linegar's fish and chip shop, along with her husband, Stan.

Quoting Eric:
I think I sent my previous message before I had finished!

I am newish to the village but I have a long standing interest in local history from North Derbyshire and Sheffield.

I have enjoyed Helen's talks on Borden and Tunstall but I am astounded by the wealth of archive resources she has used to write her books.

If she hasn't done this before - would it be possible to ask Helen if she would do a lecture about her resources - her range, the successes and the dead ends.

I feel that this would be very interesting.

Many thanks

Eric Morris

Hi Eric Helen will be at the Forge opposite the Maypole Inn on Thursday 11th February at 11am she will be giving a talk to our members on the hisory of the Barrow Trust you may like to join us. Regards Eileen (one of two editors)

I am interested to know if anyone still remembers an old cottage on a corner of Cryalls Lane. It was possibly thatched. I know the person who was ordered to pull it down by the farmer/landowne r in the 1960's. The reason given was that it was too close to the road. He doesn't remember any details that can help. Surely someone must have takes a photo in the past? It does show up on certain maps and when one walks into the area there are remains of a chalk pit.
Hope someone can solve the mystery!

Tried the census but difficult without a house or occupier's name.

My great-grand father was born in Borden on March 21st, 1883 and baptized May 6th, 1883 at the Saints Peter and Paul church. Father and mother were George E. Hutson and Frances J. Hutson (nee Jordan); siblings included Edith Eliza, Stanley, and Wallace. I am not sure if they lived in Borden proper or in a nearby town or village, possibly on Deans Hill Road near Bredgar. George may have been a farmer in the fruits.

Because of my grand-fathers early death, we do not know much about him or his family, and possible relatives still in the area. I have searched many of the archives available online and have gathered some limited information; maybe that is all there is, however, I thought I would post this with your organization to see if perhaps someone out there would have some more information about this Hutson family from Borden area.

Thank you,

Tom Hutson III

I have been looking at the website with my Mum, Iris Tumber (nee Whitenstall). She remembers visiting the Forge to see her Uncle George and Auntie May (Minnie) when she was young. She remembers them coming down to Faversham on the motorbike and sidecar which is shown on your site. I can also remember them coming down to Faversham in the 1950's on the motorbike and sidecar. Mum would be interested in seeing any other pictures of the Forge as it used to be.
