Extracts from Borden Parish Council Minute book
13th February 1946
Mr. W E Whiting Chairman of the Borden Parish Council presided and explained that the meeting had been called to approve the action of the Parish Council in entering into a provisional agreement to purchase from Messrs Wills and Packham Ltd. 4 ½ acres of the rough land on the north of the Playstool Meadow for the purpose of enlarging and improving the Playstool and for the purposes to improve the amenities of the Parish; also to consent to the raising of the loan necessary for the purpose. All the members of the Parish Council were present and upwards of 50 Parishioners.
After full discussion it was resolved on the proposition of Mr. Valentin seconded by Mr. Tress that the Parish Council go in to the question of estimates
a) For levelling the existing Playstool and the land proposed to be purchased the same level throughout.
b) For levelling the Playstool to the lowest existing point and the new area to a level not necessarily the same level as the Playstool after it has been levelled.
This was carried unanimously.
It was resolved that the consent of the meeting be given to raising by The Parish Council a loan of the sum of £200 to defray the cost of the ground proposed to be purchased, the necessary fencing and expenses incidental to the purchase.
April 1946 The Annual Meeting of the Borden Parish Council was held at The Barrow Trust Room Borden 15th April 1946 Present The Rev. W J B.Crouch, Mr. A. Greenlees, Dr. K W Hardy, Messrs W. Hattie, R A Huntley, W F Kemsley, J M Mair, S F Valentin and P Woodman.
…..The question of Peace Celebrations in the village was mentioned. After full discussion it was decided in view of the food position that the Council do nothing in the matter but support the Fete which is being organised for 3rd August….
June 1946 A meeting of the Borden Parish Council was held at the Barrow Trust Room Borden on 25th June 1946. Present The Rev. W J B Crouch (Chairman) W F Kemsley (Vice Chairman) Messrs A Greenlees, W Hattie, R A Huntley, J M Mair, S F Valentin and P Woodman.
……In view of the refusal of the Ministry of Health to sanction a loan for the purchase of the 5 acres of land ajoining the Playstool it was resolved that the Chairman ask that a meeting of the subscribers to the Borden Welcome Home Fund be called, so that the position with regard to the Playstool might be explained to them and their assistance be invited….
August 1946 A meeting of the Borden Parish Council was held in the Barrow Trust Room on 22nd August 1946 Present were The Rev. W J B Crouch (Chairman) Mr. W F Kemsley (Vice Chairman) Messrs A Greenlees, W Hattie, R A Huntley, J M Mair, S F Valentin and Dr Hardy.
…The clerk reported the receipt of a cheque for £200 from the Borden Welcome Home Committee Fund to enable the Council to purchase the land next to the Playstool. The Clerk was instructed to write to the Secretary of the fund and convey to the committee the grateful thanks of the council for their generous assistance; also now to inform Messrs Harris and Harris to act for the Council on their purchase of the land. It was also decided to defer the fencing until after the ground had been levelled….
